Dues Balance Forgiveness Constitutional Referendum Q&A’s
Members have been contacting the APFA Dues Department with questions about a Constitutional Referendum that is currently out for a membership vote.
What the referendum is about:
Under a Constitutional provision that was in effect only from January 8, 2010 to June 18, 2014, members on unpaid status were required to pay dues. If the referendum passes, if a member has an unpaid status dues balance for any time during that period, that balance will be forgiven if the member makes a one-time payment to APFA of $123.00 or the unpaid dues balance accrued during that period, whichever is smaller. The payment must be made within three (3) months of the date the referendum passes, and will not be applied to any dues balance.
Below are answers to the questions that are being asked most frequently. The numbers and dollar amounts are as of the May 2015 Board of Directors meeting at which the Board decided to send out the referendum.
Q1. Why are the dates January 8, 2010 to June 14, 2014, being used?
A1. That was the only time frame during which members on unpaid status were obligated to pay dues.
Q2. How many Flight Attendants will have dues balances forgiven if the referendum passes?
A2. Approximately 1,300.
Q3. How many of those are LAA? How many are LUS?
A3. All are LAA, including former TWA Flight Attendants who have an unpaid status dues balance owing from any time between January 8, 2010 and June 14, 2014. None of the affected Flight Attendants is LUS, because by the time APFA became the representative of the LUS Flight Attendants on September 2, 2014, members were no longer required to pay dues while on unpaid status.
Q4. What’s the dollar amount of the dues balances that will be forgiven if the referendum passes?
A4. Approximately $800,000.
Q5. How many Flight Attendants paid their unpaid status dues during this same period?
A5. Approximately 4,800.
Q6. What was the amount paid by those Flight Attendants?
A6. Approximately $1.1 million.
Q7. Will the members who paid their unpaid status dues between January 8, 2010 and June 18, 2014, be sent a refund?
Q8. Why is this dues forgiveness being proposed now?
A8. In May 2015, the APFA Board of Directors passed a resolution to have the Constitutional change sent out to the membership for a vote, and explained why the change was being proposed. Click here to read the resolution.
Q9. How was the $123 payment amount arrived at?
A9. It is equal to 3 months of dues at $41 per month.
